Beaver Falls, PA – For 85 minutes Geneva′s women′s soccer team played California University of Pennsylvania to an even match. However, with just four minutes remaining in regulation, California scored the game′s only goal when sophomore Amanda Heister scored on a breakaway for the eventual game winning tally. In the first match for both teams, Geneva and California both had several scoring opportunities throughout the match, but neither could find the net.

Geneva and California finished the match with 14 shots each, but it was the 14th and final shot of the night for the Vulcans that proved to be the difference.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Weaver stood tall all night in making ten saves, while Erin Cook and Hannah Speigle combined to make nine saves and share the shut-out victory.

Geneva′s best chance of the night came in the 70th minutes on a shot from just inside the box off of Nicole Beadling′s foot. Speigle made the save and Geneva never seriously threatened the California net. Junior Jenna Witkowski led the Golden Tornadoes with eight shots, while Amanda Caler attempted four shots in her collegiate debut.

The Golden Tornadoes, which dropped to 0-1 on the young season, will take to the road on Saturday when they travel to Urbana University. Geneva returns home for matches against Cedarville and Point Park next week.
