Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva′s volleyball team came within a first-place tie-breaker of hosting the 2006 American Mideast Conference tournament. Co-divisional champions with Roberts Wesleyan, the Golden Tornadoes will open the tournament as the number two seed out of the AMC North and will be forced to travel to Rochester, NY with the rest of the qualifiers for the tournament, which begins on Friday.
Geneva and Roberts Wesleyan finished the season with identical 11-3 conference records, but because the Raiders defeated third place Notre Dame College twice, it received the first place nod and the opportunity to host the tournament.
For the Golden Tornadoes, they will begin their play-off run on Friday at 2:00 pm against the first round winner between Daemen College and Urbana University. Should the Golden Tornadoes get by their first match, they would meet the winner of Cedarville and Houghton in a quarterfinal match on Friday at 5:00 pm. The semi-finals and final matches are scheduled to be played on Saturday. All four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the regional tournament the following week at Walsh University based on the Cavaliers winning the AMC South regular season title. In order for Geneva to continue its season past this weekend, it must win at least two matches and survive through Friday.
The Golden Tornadoes have been outstanding in the second half of the season. At one point posting an 8-16 overall record, Geneva finished the campaign at 15-18, including its 11-3 AMC North mark. In its ninth and final year as a member of the American Mideast Conference, head coach Wendy Smith and Geneva claimed its first divisional crown.
