Anthony Ices Geneva Victory over Goshen to Remain Perfect

Canton, OH - It′s always nice to have the ball in the hands of a guard late in the game, especially in a game that you are trying to hold a late lead. On Friday night, Jackie Anthony was that person for Geneva′s women′s team as the Golden Tornadoes managed to hold off Goshen College 58-55 to move to 2-0 on the young season.

Anthony knocked down late free throws to preserve the victory as a part of her team leading 17 point night. Ironically, Geneva was just 12-20 from the foul line, but it was Anthony′s work at the line late in the game that enabled the Golden Tornadoes to get their second victory on the young season.

In addition to Anthony′s 17 points, Allyson Clarke and Renee Rawding each scored 12 points in the victory. Clarke led everyone with a 15 rebound effort for her first double-double of the season. Despite shooting just 2-15 (13%) from three point range, the Golden Tornadoes got their victory because of some stingy second half defense. For the second time in as many games, Geneva′s defense held strong in the final 20 minutes. On Friday night, Geneva held Goshen to just eight second half field goals and just 25 points in the final 20 minutes.

Tied at 30 after the first half, Geneva was able to build a lead and hold off Goshen′s late game surge. "It was another nice win for our ladies," said head coach Ron Galbreath. "We are going to have to work hard for everything we get this season and after two games, I couldn′t be prouder of the effort I am seeing."

Geneva will get right back to work at the Malone College Classic on Saturday when they face off against the host Pioneers at 4:00 pm. Geneva will then enjoy a week off for the holiday before its home opener next Saturday against St. Vincent College.
