Beaver Falls, PA – Good teams become great when players step up in key situations to win games, especially when those players are not usually the main contributors to a team′s success. In the case of Geneva′s women′s basketball team, a pair of players made their presence felt on Saturday afternoon in helping the Golden Tornadoes to a 67-55 victory over Ursuline College. The victory, Geneva′s fourth straight win, helped to improve its overall record to 15-3, including an 8-1 mark in the AMC North.
Ruth Dobos, who recently became Geneva′s all-time shot blocker, was equally effective on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. With teammate Allyson Clarke in foul trouble for most of the game, Dobos showed her ability to score with 11 points, her ability to rebound with 13 boards and her ability to block shots with six. Meanwhile, Michawn Rich came alive off of Geneva′s bench with nine points that helped Geneva overcome an Ursuline second half lead.
Trailing by two points at halftime, both teams came out of the locker room a bit sluggish. In fact, not until Ursuline made a basket with 16:30 remaining did either team score a point. With Geneva trailing 39-35, the Golden Tornadoes went on a 16-0 which was sparked by Rich. With the game tied at 39, Rich scored seven consecutive points to give Geneva a lead it would never relinquish.
Although Clarke was in early foul trouble she still managed to lead the Golden Tornadoes with 19 points. Renee Rawding collected 11 points, including a 6-7 effort from the foul line.
For Ursuline, Tiffany Gwin scored 14 points as the only Arrows player to reach double figures.
The victory keeps Geneva on pace with first-place Daemen College. Daemen won for the ninth consecutive time in the conference on Friday night and is currently 9-0 in the league, which is good enough for a one-game lead in the standings over Geneva. Geneva and Daemen will meet at Metheny Fieldhouse in the regular season finale on February 17th.
Next week, the Golden Tornadoes will travel to Carlow University on Thursday night before returning home next Saturday to host Franciscan University in a non-conference match-up.
