First Place Showdown Fizzles, Streaked Stopped at Seven

Amherst, NY - In a game that would ultimately decide first-place in the AMC North, Geneva′s women put their seven-game winning streak on the line at Daemen College. Despite the heavy build up for a showdown between the league′s top two teams, Daemen proved to still be the class of the conference by dispatching Geneva 76-56. The loss dropped Geneva to 11-3, including a 4-1 record in the division. Meanwhile, Daemen improved to 16-4 with a perfect 6-0 mark in the AMC North.

In a game that started with a fast pace and just continued to speed up throughout the night, Daemen was able to control the game by scoring in transition and playing a suffocating style of defense. Geneva, the number two ranked defensive team in the nation, yielded 23 more points than its season average.

Daemen held a nine-point lead at the half, but out scored Geneva 37-26 in the final 20 minutes. In that second half, the Golden Tornadoes managed just eight field goals, while Daemen posted a 58% mark (15-26) from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Germany Jackson led all scorers with 24 points, while Mary Kate Wilson added 21 in the Daemen victory. Perhaps the star of the game for the Wildcats was Alison LaPoint, who scored 18 points and dished out 11 assists.

For Geneva, only Allyson Clarke scored in double figures with a team high 21 points and nine rebounds.

Geneva will have an important conference weekend coming with back to back games in the AMC North. On Friday night, Geneva will host Houghton with Roberts Wesleyan visiting Beaver Falls on Saturday afternoon.
