Geneva Moves Win Streak to Eight, Ties All-Time Mark

Houghton, NY - Geneva′s women′s basketball team came within one victory of tying the school record for consecutive victories when it dropped a decision to Daemen College back in mid-January. Since that loss, the Golden Tornadoes have put together another streak and on Friday night Geneva matched the school′s all-time record of eight consecutive victories with a 56-51 decision over Houghton College. The Golden Tornadoes moved to 19-3 overall, including a 10-1 record in the AMC North and maintaining its strong hold on second place in the conference. On Saturday, Geneva will have a chance to set a new school record for the longest winning streak in school history when it travels to Roberts Wesleyan College. The last time Geneva won eight straight was during the 1996-97 season.

On Friday night, Geneva started slowly as it watched Houghton open a 10-2 lead to start the game in the first four minutes. The Golden Tornadoes were able to find their legs after the long bus ride to New York and eventually took control of the game to take a 27-26 lead into the locker room.

Geneva opened a nine-point lead with just under four minutes remaining in the game, but Houghton put together a 7-1 run to close the gap to 54-51 with 22 seconds remaining. Allyson Clarke was able to put the game away with a pair of free throws to keep Geneva′s train rolling toward the post-season. Just one game behind Daemen College for first place in the AMC North and an automatic bid to the national tournament, the Golden Tornadoes hope their season finale a week from Saturday against Daemen will decide first place.

Against Houghton, Geneva′s defense again came up big and kept the Highlanders under their defensive average for the season. The top defensive group in the league, Geneva is allowing opponents just over 52 points per game. Offensively, Geneva relied on junior Allyson Clarke, who led all scorers with 20 points, to go along with 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. Lauren Uranker knocked down three treys for nine points and Ruth Dobos added nine points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Geneva will head to Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday before traveling to Notre Dame next Wednesday and then close out the regular season at home against Daemen next Saturday night.
