WIN STREAK REACHES SIX, GENEVAUPENDS FRANCISCAN
Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s men′s soccer team is starting to get peoples attention. The Golden Tornadoes moved their win streak to six straight on Saturday night with a 2-1 victory over Franciscan University. The victory helped improve Geneva′s overall record to 6-1, which has officially doubled the Golden Tornadoes′ win total from all of last year.
Geneva spotted Franciscan the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute, which officially ended junior goalkeeper Sam McCracken′s scoreless streak at 481 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. The streak, the second longest in school history, lasted over three weeks and spanned a period of six matches.
Three minutes after Franciscan opened the scoring; Scott Swartley found the net on his team leading fifth goal of the season. Although Swartley got credit for the goal, it was Russ Picard who did most of the work. Picard went streaking past a defender down the left sideline and fed a perfect ball through the penalty area right on the foot of Swartley, who deposited it into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, Bruce Fox took a led pass from Mark Zubrick and gently slid it past a fallen Franciscan goalkeeper to give Geneva a lead that it would never relinquish. Geneva out shot Franciscan 16-14, which marks the seventh straight contest that Geneva has found a way to out shoot its opponent. McCracken, although he allowed his first goal in six games, did make four saves to notch his sixth victory of the season, while maintaining a goals against average of 0.44.
Geneva will enjoy four days off before putting its six game winning streak on the line at home next Thursday night against cross-town foe Penn State Beaver at 7 pm at the Merriman Athletic Complex.
