DOUBLE TROUBLE, GENEVADROPS TWO AT W & J
Washington, PA - It was the first matches for Geneva′s men′s and women′s soccer teams against PAC opposition on Friday night. Geneva′s teams traveled to Washington, PA for a soccer doubleheader. At the end of the night, both Geneva teams went home licking wounds from a pair of losses. Geneva′s men saw their seven game winning streak halted after a 2-1 setback, while the women were shut-out for the third straight game and fell 3-0.
The night opened on a positive note as the men′s team opened the scoring in game one on a goal by Kenton Burkhart in the 38th minute. Geneva maintained that lead until W & J tied the score in the 61st minute. Three minutes later, the President′s notched the game winner and Geneva could not respond. For the first time this season, Geneva was out shot as W & J pulled the trick by the count of 16-9. Sam McCracken made six saves to help Geneva stay in the match, but the offense couldn′t respond.
In the night cap, Geneva saw W & J′s women out shoot them 26-4 in a game that was one-sided from the start. Amber Weaver was again the bright spot for Geneva as she turned away 13 shots, but three balls did find the net, which was more than enough on Friday night. W & J opened the scoring with a tally in the 13th minute and they extended that lead in the 39th. The trend for Geneva′s women is to play stronger in the first half, but on Friday night, they allowed just one second half goal and were able to stay competitive throughout the night.
Geneva′s men fell to 7-2 on the season, while the women′s team lost for the fifth straight time and dropped to 2-8 in 2007.
Both teams will be back in action on Monday night when they host Westminster College in another PAC doubleheader with the women′s game starting at 5:00 pm.
