GENEVABOUNCES BACK WITH IMPRESSIVE
ROAD VICTORY
Waynesburg, PA - Just three days after the most frustrating loss of the season, Geneva′s men′s basketball team put forth one of its best efforts of the season. Fresh off of an 18-point loss at Hiram in which it allowed 113 points, Geneva got a balanced offensive attack, along with a solid defensive effort in an 86-72 win at Waynesburg. The victory helped Geneva improve to 8-6, while Waynesburg fell to 6-7.
Head coach Jeff Santarsiero had stressed effort and defense in practice the last two days and the 12th year head coach got exactly what he ordered on Saturday night. After watching Waynesburg jump out to a 5-0 lead in the first minute of the game, Geneva quickly saw its fortunes tune thanks to the shooting prowess of sophomore Bryan Hill. One week after posting a career high 31 points against Saint Vincent, Hill turned the trick again and matched that number with a game high 31 points against Waynesburg. Hill knocked down four consecutive three point field goals in the next two minutes to give Geneva a 12-5 lead. Hill canned another three point field goal later in the half and finished with 15 points at the break. Geneva led by as many as 15 points in the first half and took a 41-29 lead to the break.
On Wednesday night, Geneva watched Hiram erase a 14-point deficit, but the Golden Tornadoes were not about to allow the Yellow Jackets the same luxury. Waynesburg did get the deficit into single digits and got as close as eight points down with the score 70-62 with 6:12 remaining in the game. Greg McDivitt got the game back to a double digit advantage and Justin Nardi extended the lead to 13 with one of his two three-point field goals on the night.
In addition to Hill′s 31 points, Geneva got several solid contributions on the offensive side of the floor. McDivitt scored 19 points and pulled down a team best nine rebounds. Nardi scored 14 points in a supporting role. Tim Drakely, who entered the game as the leading scorer in the PAC, was held to 16 points on 5-16 shooting from the field.
Geneva will make the trip to Thomas More on Wednesday night before returning home next Saturday to host Thiel College.
