GENEVAFALLS TO MT. VERNONIN NCCAA

REGIONAL SEMI-FINALS

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s women′s basketball team lost just three games on its home floor all season. The unfortunate fact for head coach Ron Galbreath and the Golden Tornadoes was that two of those losses came in the final two games of the season. Geneva was looking to avenge a five-point loss to Westminster in the regular season finale, but the Golden Tornadoes were unable to pick up a win. On Thursday night, Geneva dropped a 67-57 decision to Mt. Vernon Nazarene in the NCCAA Eastern Regional semi-finals. The loss dropped Geneva to 20-6, while Mt. Vernon improved to 18-11. The Cougars will now move on to face Roberts Wesleyan a week from Saturday in the regional finals. As for Geneva, it will have to hope for an at-large bid to the NCCAA national tournament.

Geneva looked good early as it opened up a 12-point lead at 30-18 on a Christine Carugati three-point jumper with 4:07 to play in the first half. Mt. Vernon put together a rally late in the half and cut Geneva′s lead to just two points at 33-31 at the half.

Mt. Vernon completed the comeback by taking the lead at 53-51 with 7:38 to play. The back breaker for Geneva came on a rare five-point play for the Cougars. Ashley Brown canned a three-point field goal and Kellie Jokela was fouled away from the ball, which resulted in a pair of made free throws. A two-point deficit turned into a seven point deficit on one possession and the Golden Tornadoes could not rally.

Allyson Clarke continued her magical season with a team best 22 points, including 10-13 from the foul line. Renee Rawding added 12 for the Golden Tornadoes. Mt. Vernon got 18 points from Rachel Fiely and 17 points from Amanda Himes to lead the victory.

Geneva will have to wait until March 9th to learn its fate, which is when the at-large bids, if any are granted, will be announced. Should the Golden Tornadoes get the call, they will travel to Oakland City, IN for the NCCAA nationals on March 13-15.
