WIN STREAK HALTED AT SEVEN, GT′S SEE SIX-RUN
LEAD ERASED
Beaver Falls, PA - It certainly did feel much like baseball weather at Geneva′s 33rd Street Field on Monday. With temperatures hovering in the mid-30′s, the Golden Tornadoes didn′t let the cold get in the way of opening up a 6-0 lead after three innings. Unfortunately, Geneva could not hold the late and dropped a 10-9 decision to Penn State Beaver. The Golden Tornadoes watched their seven game win streak come to an end as they fell to 7-4 on the season, while the Lions improved to 5-2.
Geneva got its offense going early with a pair of runs in the first inning without the luxury of a hit. The Golden Tornadoes banged out five hits in a four-run third inning. Trailing 6-0 into the fourth inning, Penn State tallied two runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth. They took their first lead with a seven-spot in the seventh inning, including five unearned runs off of reliever Justin McGurgan.
The Golden Tornadoes rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh and picked up a solo tally in the eighth on Jon Jurinko′s first career home run.
Geneva banged out 16 hits in the game, including two each from Andy Lubich, Joel Gatti, Dylan Viehdorfer, Justin Acosta and Steve Bowser. McGurgan took the hard luck loss in just 1.2 innings of work. Phil Shallenberger started the game for Geneva and worked five innings and allowed three runs on three hits, while striking out five.
The Golden Tornadoes will open PAC play on Wednesday when they travel to Bethany College for a doubleheader. Geneva will get a rematch with Penn State Beaver on Saturday when it travels to Monaca for a doubleheader.
