SUNBURNED, GENEVADENIED TRIP TO NATIONALS,
REBOUND AGAINST MALONE
Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s post-season run came down to one game against Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Saturday morning, but the Golden Tornadoes came up on the short end of 3-2 decision in the third and deciding game of their best of three series with the Cougars. The loss denied Geneva a chance to play in the NCCAA national tournament in West Palm Beach next week. The Golden Tornadoes rebounded with a 5-4 victory over Malone College in the final game of the NCCAA Eastern Regionals. The split moved Geneva′s overall record to 22-12 with still two weeks remaining in the regular season.
After splitting the first two games of the best of three series, Geneva and Mt. Vernon faced off to decide the regional champion. Geneva′s championship hopes looked bright after a two-run fourth inning put them on the board. A double steal that plated Anjelica Marsh was followed by an RBI single from Samantha Bautista for the first two scores of the game. Mt. Vernon cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Cougars scored the two game deciding runs in the sixth inning and Geneva could not rally from the deficit. Geneva managed six hits, including a three hit game from Bautista. Ashley Archer took the loss despite pitching a complete game with just four hits allowed in six innings of work.
After Mt. Vernon defeated Malone 4-1 in the middle game of Saturday′s tripleheader, Geneva bounced back for a 5-4 victory over the Pioneers. Rebekah Wahl pitched all seven innings for her 10th victory of the season. She struck out four batters and allowed just two earned runs. Geneva jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Amy Pearce plated two with a triple, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Lyndsay Piettte. Geneva added an unearned and was cruising with a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning. Malone rallied for four runs in the sixth to tie the game before Leanne Abate′s RBI single scored Kim Slater who reached on a double one batter earlier.
Geneva will travel to Point Park on Monday before returning home on Tuesday for its final home games of the season with a doubleheader against Waynesburg.
