Curtain Goes Up, Women′s Soccer Victorious in Opener

Pittsburgh, PA – After just one game of the 2008 season, head coach Linda Sumner and the Geneva women′s soccer team already has half as many victories as it did throughout the entire 2007 campaign. After winning just two matches last year, the Golden Tornadoes came away with a season opening 2-0 victory over LaRoche College on Friday afternoon.

Playing the host school on the first day of the LaRoche College season opening tournament, Geneva picked up a pair of first half goals and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Londino made the lead hold up with her first victory and shut-out of the season.

Both teams remained scoreless in the first half until junior Amanda Munsch broke free on a breakaway and scored Geneva′s first goal of the season assisted by Amanda Caler. Just eight minutes later, senior Kelsey Anderson followed her own shot and slammed a rebound into the back of the net for an insurance tally.

Geneva out shot LaRoche 11-6 in the game, but it was Londino that turned away all six Redhawk shots to earn the shut-out and the victory.

“We have a very young team and we played a bit nervous in the first half,” said head coach Linda Sumner. “Once we got on the board, we were able to settle down and play our game. This is great win for our program. It′s nice to see all the hard work in the off-season pay-off with a positive result.”

Geneva won′t have much time to celebrate as it will face Carlow University at LaRoche College on Saturday at noon. The Golden Tornadoes open their home schedule next Tuesday against Point Park University.
