Geneva College hosted U.S. Senator Arlen Specter at a town hall meeting on Thursday, August 28. Open to members of the campus and the surrounding community, the meeting provided a public forum for constituents to discuss issues important to the region, state and nation.

Senator Arlen Specter at the town hall meeting on Geneva's campus“I'm here to give a brief report on what′s going on in Washington and to find out what is on your minds,” he said. Specter added that during the Senate′s August recess, he is making it a point to visit all 67 counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Geneva was his eighth stop this week.

After giving a brief update on current issues in Washington, Specter opened the floor for the audience to voice their questions and concerns. Over the next hour and a half, he answered questions on a variety of topics, including small businesses, the energy crisis, the death penalty, funding for respite care, and public transportation.

Rebekah Guthrie, a senior English major at Geneva, came to hear the senator′s opinion on the energy crisis and the local economy. “I'm really glad that Geneva hosted this meeting,” she says. “I think it′s a good thing that we're getting more involved in the local community.”
