George Weigel to speak at Geneva.Beaver Falls, Pa. – George Weigel, distinguished senior fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, is a Catholic theologian and one of America's leading public intellectuals. He is the author or editor of 20 books, has a syndicated column, and contributes to Newsweek and NBC News. Weigel brings his nationally recognized expertise to the 2008 – 2009 Colloquia Series at Geneva College, scheduled on Thursday, Sept. 18 and Friday, Sept. 19 in Skye Lounge.

The Colloquia Series has been designed as a forum where the Geneva College community and local residents may engage in academic discussion and debate. Fostering compelling and provocative discussion on socio-cultural, scientific, religious, literary, political, economic and educational issues, the series attempts to drive at the heart of many of the ideas and practices that shape our lives and the world in which we live.

 

Weigel holds 11 honorary doctorates, and has been awarded both the papal cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the Gloria Artis gold medal by the Republic of Poland. Weigel and his wife Joan have three children and one grandchild, and live in North Bethesda, Maryland.

His first lecture, The Cube, the Cathedral and the Election will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7:00 p.m., in Skye Lounge. The second of the series, Against the Grain: Christianity and Democracy, War and Peace will be held at 10:10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 19. There is no fee for admission. Skye Lounge is in the Student Center on the Geneva College Campus in Beaver Falls.
