GENEVAGETS STUNG BY YELLOWJACKETS
IN FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK
Beaver Falls, PA -One year ago, Geneva′s football team served as a tough road block to a Waynesburg team that was enjoying an outstanding season. The Golden Tornadoes derailed the Yellow jackets with an exciting overtime victory. Thoughts of that 2007 loss had to have been sneaking into the minds of the Waynesburg contingent on Saturday night, but this time the Yellow Jackets found a way to prevail by the score of 34-28. With the loss, Geneva fell to 1-5 while Waynesburg improved to 4-2 on the campaign.
Waynesburg scored the game′s first ten points on a Bryan Arbes 30 yard field goal and a Billy Becker one-yard run. Midway through the second quarter, Geneva cut into that lead with an impressive 11 play, 80 yard drive that was capped off by a Gerard Muschette four yard run. The momentum was short-lived as Waynesburg′s Scott Cree took the ensuing kick-off 74 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead back to ten points.
Geneva got back to within three with an A.J. Delmonico two yard touchdown reception from David Girardi with just five seconds remaining before halftime.
With all the momentum, Geneva started the second half with a Greg Pfeiffer interception which turned into points as the Golden Tornadoes capped a 40 yard drive with a Luke Duriancik 25 yard touchdown reception for the first lead of the game.
Arbes connected on a 42 yard field goal to cut the lead to one before back to back Yellow Jacket touchdowns gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Josh Fisher caught a 46 yard touchdown for the go ahead score with just over a minute gone in the fourth quarter. Delmonico caught his second touchdown of the game for Geneva with 1:33 remaining but Geneva′s on-side kick was unsuccessful and Waynesburg ran out the clock.
David Girardi completed 21-30 passes for 271 yards and three touchdowns in his most productive game of the season. Luke Duriancik caught seven passes for 81 yards and Brian Dvorsak pulled in four receptions for 78 yards. On the ground, Gerard Muschette rushed for 64 yards on 16 carries.
On the defensive end of the field, Zach Feltrop, who was playing with a broken wrist and torn ligaments, led the way with eight tackles. Derek McElhaney came away with his first interception of the year.
Geneva will head back to the drawing board in search of its second win of the season next Saturday at Saint Vincent College. The Golden Tornadoes will return home on November 8th to host Thomas More.
