GENEVABARGES OVER BETHANY

Bethany, WV - If Geneva′s game plan going into Saturday′ match-up with Bethany College was to establish its running game consider the result an overwhelming success. The Golden Tornadoes won for the second week in a row with a 38-23 decision over Bethany College on Saturday. On its way to victory, Geneva put up its most impressive offensive numbers of the year. Most notably, the Golden Tornadoes rushed the ball 50 times for 339 yards including a pair of backs that eclipsed the century mark. Both Matt Barge (143 yds) and Gerard Muschette (139 yds) went past the 100 yard mark for the afternoon. Teammate Matt Dean also chipped in a 50 yard effort on just eight carries.

Geneva spotted Bethany the first score of the game when Matt Cruse pulled in a 57 yard pass from Chad Smith as the end result of a flea-flicker. After the extra point was missed, Geneva scored on a Brian Dvorsak six-yard reception to tie the game. Geneva was unable to convert its extra point and the game remained tied at 6-6. The lead changed hands four more times in the first half, but it was the offensive explosion Geneva provided in the last 2 ½ minutes to proved to be the difference. Trailing 20-14, Matt Dean′s two-yard plunge gave the Golden Tornadoes their first lead of the game at 21-20. After an interception by Rich Kolesar in the end zone, Geneva drove the ball 80 yards and scored on Dvorsak′s second touchdown of the game from 16 yards out.

On the next drive, Jason Kelderhouse picked off a Chad Smith pass which led to a 32-yard Nick DiPietro field goal with just seven seconds remaining in the half. Geneva had gone from six points down to an 11-point halftime lead. The two teams combined for 51 first half points, but managed only ten combined points in the final 30 minutes.

The only second half touchdown came on a Matt Barge 51 yard run with 11:33 remaining in the game to put it away. Geneva racked up 411 yards of total offense including an average of 6.0 yards per play.

Bethany′s Chad Smith did complete 24-47 passes for 306 yards but it was not enough to overcome Geneva′s dominate ground game. Geneva′s defense held a powerful Bethany offense to just three second half points. Zach Feltrop led the charge with 14 tackles while teammate Aaron Tommelleo was credited with 13 tackles in the game.

Geneva will welcome PAC champions Thomas More to Reeves Field next Saturday afternoon. Thomas More defeated Washington & Jefferson on Saturday to complete an undefeated conference record and claim its first PAC title. Geneva and Thomas More are scheduled to kick-off at 1:30 pm.
