RICH ROLLS, SENIOR LEADS GENEVA PAST

PENN STATE BEAVER

Beaver Falls, PA -Coming into the new women′s basketball season, Geneva College knew it would have to find a way to replace the scoring and rebounding production that was lost with the graduation of Allyson Clarke. On Tuesday night, senior Michawn Rich more than filled that void with a career effort that helped lead Geneva past Penn State Beaver by the score of 78-75. The victory helped Geneva to improve to 3-1, while the Lady Lions fell to 1-2 on the young season.

After Penn State scored the first basket of the game, Geneva never again relinquished the lead, but the victory did not come without a struggle. Leading by ten points at the half, Geneva quickly extended its lead to 13 points. The Lady Lions came roaring back and twice cut the lead to one point with just under seven minutes left in regulation. Down the stretch, Geneva was able to convert from the foul line to keep its lead. After Christine Carugati split a pair of free throws with ten seconds remaining, Katie Landis fired a potential game tying three-pointer at the buzzer that bounced off the backboard and the front of the rim that helped Geneva to preserve its victory.

The second half turned into the Michawn Rich show as she posted 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead Geneva in both categories for the game. She was 6-7 from the foul line in the second half as the Golden Tornadoes converted 15-18 foul shots in the final 20 minutes. Valerie Hamilton posted 17 points and eight rebounds and Rachel Barry scored 15 points, including six key free throws down the stretch.

The Lady Lions were led by some impressive play from Jasmine Green. She scored a game high 28 points, including a pair of three point field goals. She also led Penn State with seven rebounds. Heather Sandusky scored 14 points before fouling out with three minutes remaining in the game. Geneva′s Renee Rawding also fouled out but not before scoring ten points in the victory.

Geneva will enjoy another week off for the Thanksgiving holiday before beginning PAC play next Wednesday at Grove City College.
