SKELETON CREW FALLS TO W & J
Beaver Falls, PA - Washington & Jefferson′s women′s basketball team has been giving all of its opponent′s problems this year. For the Golden Tornadoes, they were forced to battle the co-PAC leaders with only seven healthy bodies. The Presidents used their depth as an advantage and ran away from Geneva College in the second half by the score of 84-47. The loss dropped the Golden Tornadoes to 8-9 while W & J improved to 16-2.
Geneva seemed up for the challenge against the Presidents early as they responded to a 5-0 deficit with eight straight points and took a 13-8 lead before Washington & Jefferson could get going on offense. The Presidents responded with a 21-0 run to take control of the game, but were still unable to put Geneva away by halftime. W & J took a 38-26 lead into the break but quickly took control in the second half. The Presidents opened the second half with 11 straight points and never again allowed the Golden Tornadoes to get the lead under 20 points. W & J finished the game with its biggest advantage of 37 points. The combination of Emily Hays (18 pts) and Stephanie Smith (16 pts) combined for 34 points in the game. W & J used its 67% shooting from the field in the second half to take control of the contest.
Michawn Rich did her best to keep Geneva College in the game with her team best 17 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Beth DeLuca was the only other Geneva player to reach double figures with 11 points.
Geneva will take to the road for the first time in two weeks when it visits Bethany College on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes return home next Wednesday to face Saint Vincent College.
