BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – In the tradition of challenging students to be engaged in the world around them and to formulate principled Christian responses intellectually and practically, Geneva College hosts a Colloquia series each semester. Geneva College′s Colloquia speakers come from around the country, and occasionally from other parts of the world, to discuss compelling and provocative socio-cultural, scientific, religious, literary, educational, and economic ideas and practices that shape the world.

The Colloquia series is open to the campus community and the public at no charge. The scheduled line-up for the spring ′09 semester follows.

Coach Herman Boone

Herman Boone will speak on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Metheny Fieldhouse on the Geneva College campus. This former football coach at T.C. Williams High School and his football team were the basis of the popular film Remember the Titans.

Herman Boone received his bachelors and masters degrees from North Carolina Central University and went on to teach and coach high school football in Virginia and North Carolina. He was subject to racial controversy when he accepted the head coach position at T.C. Williams High School. The high school had recently been integrated and Boone was given the task of uniting a once-segregated body of students.

Now Boone spends his time traveling and speaking to universities nationwide. His goal is to use his experiences to motivate and teach others about respect, teamwork and community involvement.

Dr. Gary Pritchard will speak on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 6 at 10:10 a.m. in Skye Lounge of the Student Center on the Geneva College campus. Pritchard is a writer, journalist, scriptwriter and filmmaker based out of Newport in Wales, UK. His doctoral work at Azusa Pacific University was on strengths-based education, which focuses on developing students′ strengths and talents.

With a background in television and print media, Pritchard serves as Associate Dean of the School of Art, Media and Design at the University of Wales in Newport. He also teaches in the M.A. in Animation and Film program at the International Film School of Wales in Newport. His portfolio includes writing for the BBC and HTV, conducting scriptwriting workshops such as the Celtic Film Festival, and he was recently serving as a jury member at the Brief Encounters Film Festival in Bristol.

Dr. Andrew Delbanco will speak on Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m. and Friday, March 20 at 10:10 a.m. in Skye Lounge of the Student Center on the Geneva College campus. Delbanco has been called “America′s best social critic” by Time magazine. This author, social critic and professor will speak about our nation′s history and culture as part of the Colloquia series.

In addition to serving as professor and director of the American studies program at Columbia University in New York, Delbanco has written numerous books including Melville: His World and Work (Knopf 2005) and The Death of Satan: How Americans Have Lost the Sense of Evil (Farrar Straus & Giroux 1995).

Delbanco contributes regularly to The New York Review of Books and other publications and journals, and he and his work have been awarded or recognized numerous times.

Dr. David L. Kirp will speak on Monday, Apr. 20 at 10:10 a.m. in Skye Lounge of the Student Center on the Geneva College campus. Widely recognized as a public policy expert, Kirp is a professor at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.

He has focused on a wide range of public policy topics, including ethics, community, education and race and gender equality. In addition to contributing regularly to publications such as The Nation and The Atlantic Monthly, Kirp has also authored 15 books, including The Sandbox Investment: The Preschool Movement and Kids-First Politics (Harvard University Press 2007) and Shakespeare, Einstein, and the Bottom Line: The Marketing of Higher Education (Harvard University Press 2003).

In addition to his scholarly work, Kirp has founded law reform organization the Harvard Center for Law and Education, and has sponsored or served on the boards for numerous policy or advocacy groups.
