LATE RALLY SINKS GENEVA, LOSING SKID HITS FIVE

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva College and Chatham University entered Saturday night′s women′s basketball game each in desperate need of a victory. The Golden Tornadoes were trying to put an end to their four game losing streak and Chatham had won just twice in its past ten games. Geneva looked like it was set to put an end to the streak, but a late Chatham rally pushed the Cougars to a 58-56 victory which extended Geneva′s losing streak to five games and dropped its overall record to 8-12. Chatham improved to 10-11 on the season in forcing a season split between the two teams.

After holding Chatham to only nine first half field goals, the Golden Tornadoes took a 31-24 lead into the halftime locker room. Geneva came out well in the second half and quickly extended the lead to 36-24 with just over 16 minutes left to play. It was at that point that Chatham put together a 13-0 run to take a 37-26 lead. After the two sides traded baskets one last time, the Cougars never again gave up the lead.

Chatham′s Katie Sheerer scored all of her 12 points in the second half, including two free throws in the final minutes that iced the game away. Val Hamilton′s lay-up with one second remaining was not enough and the Cougars simply inbounded the ball to run out the clock.

Kayla Hilko led Chatham with 15 points in the game. The Cougars were just 9-30 (30%) from the field in the second half, but did most of their damage from the foul line by knocking down 13-20 free throws in the final 20 minutes. Geneva got a team high 11 points and 13 rebounds by Michawn Rich, who posted her seventh double-double of the season. Geneva College managed just seven field goals in the second half and only four field goals in the final 16 minutes of regulation. Val Hamilton and Alyssa Miller each scored eight points off the bench and Rachel Barry picked up a career high nine rebounds in the loss.

The Golden Tornadoes will again go in search of a victory on Wednesday night when they travel to Waynesburg University. After a trip next weekend to Thomas More, Geneva will return to Metheny Fieldhouse for the home finale on February 18th against Thiel College.
