WIN STREAK HALTED AT NINE WITH DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT AT PENN STATE BEAVER

Beaver Falls, PA - In the first two games of its three game series with Penn State Beaver this weekend, Geneva posted 40 runs against the Lions. Taking a nine game winning streak and a sizzling offense into the second game of Saturday′s doubleheader, the Golden Tornadoes saw their win streak halted despite a desperate seventh inning comeback that came up short. Geneva opened its day with an 18-1 victory over Penn State Beaver that came on the heels of a 22-4 win over the Lions on Friday. PSB turned the tables on Geneva in the night cap with a 7-6 win of their own after watching a four-run lead disappear in the seventh inning.

Geneva saw PSB score five runs in the second inning and open up a 6-1 lead early in game two. Tadd Eyster had given Geneva a short lived 1-0 lead with a lead-off homer in the first. Taking a 6-2 lead into the seventh, Penn State watched Geneva tie the game in the top of the inning. Four hits, including a two-out game tying triple off the bat of Phil Shallenberger, sparked the comeback. Tadd Eyster and Andy Lubich had three hits each in the night cap to lead an 11-hit attack. Nick Phillips lasted only two innings and allowed five earned runs in game two. Shallenberger was saddled with the loss after his own throwing error opened the flood gates for the winning run to be scored in the last of the seventh.

Game one came much easier for the Golden Tornadoes as they posted 18 runs and cruised past the Lions. Geneva put up 20 hits in game one and scored in five of its seven innings. Joel Gatti led the charge with three hits. Teammates Phil Shallenberger, Tadd Eyster, Andy Lubich, Justin McGurgan and Justin McGurgan and Justin Acosta had two hits each. Geneva put the game away with a nine run seventh inning.

On the mound in game one, Matt Baer got the win with five solid innings of work. Baer allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out four. Mike Trn tossed two hitless innings to close out the game.

Geneva will visit Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday for a PAC doubleheader. The Golden Tornadoes return home this weekend for a three-game series against Thomas More.
