SEVENTH INNING RALLY GAINS PAC SPLIT WITH W & J

Washington, PA - A two run seventh inning rally jump started the Geneva College offense in game two of Tuesday′s PAC doubleheader against Washington & Jefferson. The Golden Tornadoes plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh that lifted Geneva to a 4-3 victory in the night cap of Tuesday′s twin bill. Washington & Jefferson took game one of the doubleheader by the score of 12-6. The doubleheader split moved Geneva′s overall record to 12-4.

Jon Jurinko came up with a two-run single in the seventh inning of game two that turned out to be the game winner. The game winning single lifted Derek Sumner′s seven inning effort on the mound into his fourth victory of the season. Sumner allowed three earned runs on four hits. He struck out nine batters and moved to 4-1 on the season. After spotting the President′s two runs in the first, Geneva responded in the third when Justin McGurgan led off with a double and came around to score two batters later. Derek Sumner and Justin Acosta each had two hits in the game two victory.

Game one got off to a rough start for Geneva as Washington & Jefferson put together back to back four run innings in the first and second innings. Phil Shallenberger provided an RBI single and Jon Jurinko knocked in Geneva′s second run with an RBI triple in the second inning. A three-run sixth inning was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Justin McGurgan. Andy Lubich picked up two of Geneva′s nine hits in game one. Matt Baer lost for the first time in 2009 by allowing seven earned runs in just one inning of work. Mike Trn came on in relief and pitched the final five innings.

The Golden Tornadoes return home this weekend for a three-game series with Thomas More beginning with a single game on Friday afternoon.
