SUMNER AND BAER SHUT DOWN BEARCATS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

Latrobe, PA - Derek Sumner and Matt Baer each took the mound at Saint Vincent College on Saturday and each moved his record to 5-1 with a pair of complete game victories. Baer led Geneva to an 8-3 win in game one and Sumner pitched the Golden Tornadoes to a 4-1 victory in the night cap. The doubleheader sweep moved Geneva′s overall record to 15-7.

The Golden Tornadoes posted seven runs in the first three innings of game one capped by a three run homer off of the bat of Adam Sheiderer in a four run third inning. Geneva had just eight hits but took advantage of its opportunities with an eight run outburst. Justin McGurgan delivered a pair of hits for the Golden Tornadoes. Matt Baer tossed seven innings and allowed no earned runs while striking out three batters in the win.

Derek Sumner went seven strong innings in the night cap and allowed just seven hits and three and one earned run. He struck out eight batters to move to 5-1 on the season. With the game tied at one, Geneva took advantage of a Saint Vincent defensive miscue to post three unearned runs in the fifth inning to break the game open. In another eight hit attack, Tadd Eyster and Jon Jurinko led the way with two hits each.

The Golden Tornadoes are scheduled to play Grove City three times next week beginning with a single game on the road on Tuesday. Geneva is scheduled to host the Wolverines in a doubleheader next Thursday.
