LATE INNING LET DOWN, SWEEP ELUDES GENEVA AFTER TITAN COMEBACK

Beaver Falls, PA - For the second time in two weeks, Geneva′s softball team lost the opportunity for a doubleheader sweep when a seventh inning rally proved to be the difference in a game two loss. The Golden Tornadoes took game one of Wednesday′s doubleheader against Westminster by the score of 5-3. In the night cap, Westminster rallied for three seventh inning runs to tie the game and ultimately win it 6-4 in eight innings. The doubleheader split moved Geneva′s overall record to 14-10.

After Geneva spotted Westminster a pair of runs in game one, the Golden Tornadoes rallied with four runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead. RBI singles from Martha Adams and Adriane Blake were followed by a two-run double from Amy Pearce to give Geneva its first lead of the day. Geneva banged out 11 hits in game one including three hits from Adams and two each from Blake and Pearce. Ashley Archer won for the eighth time this year with 6 1/3 solid innings. She allowed two earned runs and struck out seven in the victory. Rebekah Wahl recorded her third save of the season by grabbing the final two outs of the game.

The Golden Tornadoes were seemingly in control of game two as they took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning. Pearce came up with an RBI single in the first to get Geneva on the board first. A Michawn Rich two-run double in the second extended the lead. Both teams traded RBI walks in the fifth as Geneva was just three outs away from a sweep. With Archer working in relief, the Titans came up with three runs in the seventh including a two-out, two-run homer off the bat of Jen Emery. Westminster completed the comeback with two unearned runs in the eighth inning. Geneva had just six hits in the night cap, but could not take advantage of five Westminster walks.

Geneva will return home on Saturday to host Washington & Jefferson in a 1:00 doubleheader.
