BATS COME ALIVE IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP, PEARCE′S RECORD SETTER LEADS HR BARAGE

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s softball team has shown glimpses of its offensive prowess throughout the season, but it had not come completely together until Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes swept a doubleheader from Washington & Jefferson by identical 7-4 scores on the strength of a very impressive offensive display. The pair of victories moved Geneva′s overall record to 16-10.

The President′s plated a run in the first inning of game one before the Golden Tornadoes answered with three runs in the third. Amy Pearce drove in the first run with a double and Lyndsay Piette delivered a two-run base hit. After the Golden Tornadoes scored again in the fourth, W & J quickly tied the game on a three-run homer from Kristine Barry. Moments later, Geneva′s Adriane Blake came right back with a three-run homer of her own to give Geneva its three-run cushion right back.

Ashley Archer went the distance for her ninth victory of the season and 50th of her career. She is just one win away from Erinne Metler′s career record of 51 victories. Archer allowed six hits and struck out ten batters in the victory. Offensively, the Golden Tornadoes managed 12 hits in game one including a 4-4 effort from Michawn Rich and two hits each from Blake, Pearce and Piette.

Michawn Rich led a ten hit attack in game two with three more knocks in the night cap. Rich was 7-8 in the doubleheader and scored four runs. She crossed the plate twice in game two, but it was Adriane Blake who scored in the first to get Geneva on the board on another Amy Pearce RBI double. W & J plated three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. The Golden Tornadoes tied the game in the second on RBI hits from Sam Bautista and Rich. Martha Adams knocked in the go ahead run with an RBI double in the fifth inning, but W & J answered again with a single tally in the bottom of the fifth. The Golden Tornadoes put the game out of reach in the seventh on a two-run homer from Rich and a solo home run from Amy Pearce. Pearce collected her record setting 24th home run of her career to surpass Erin Exler′s all-time record.

Julie DiLonardo started the game and went 2 2/3 before Rebekah Wahl worked though the sixth inning. Wahl picked up her fourth win with 3 1/3 innings of work. She allowed one run on just two hits. Ashley Archer picked up her first save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning.

Geneva will be right back to work at home on Monday when it hosts former American Mideast Conference foe Point Park in a 3 pm doubleheader.
