Beaver Falls, PA - It′s hard to believe that Geneva′s baseball team scored 23 runs on Saturday and came away with only a split in a doubleheader against Waynesburg. But the Yellowjackets returned to Washington with only one victory after posting 25 runs of their own. Geneva took one seemed like a pitcher′s duel victory 8-5 in game one, but dropped the crazy night cap by the count of 20-15. The doubleheader split moved Geneva′s overall record to 18-10.

Derek Sumner went the distance in game one and picked up his seventh victory of the season. Sumner allowed three earned runs in his seven innings of work. The all-time Geneva leader in strikeouts added to his record with six punch outs on Saturday. The offense got clicking early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Joe Jurinko connected on a two-run double to get the Golden Tornadoes on the board. Jurinko struck again in the third with an RBI single to give Geneva a 3-1 lead. A four run fifth gave Waynesburg a 5-3 lead before Geneva cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the inning. Geneva posted four runs in the sixth to take back control of the game. Phil Shallenberger came up with the big hit with a three-run blast to give Geneva the lead back before Andy Lubich′s RBI double gave the G-T′s some insurance. Geneva had nine hits in the game including three each for Shallenberger and Joe Jurinko. Shallenberger was only a single shy of hitting for the cycle in game one.

Game two was all about two of the top offenses in the PAC. Geneva′s four run first inning lead went by the boards when Waynesburg posted four in the third and eight more runs in the fourth. Starter Chris Slick was chased from the game during that big fourth inning. Geneva posted six runs in the third inning highlighted by a two-run triple from Jon Jurinko. After four innings, Waynesburg held a 12-11 lead. Incredibly that lead held up until the seventh inning when the Yellowjackets struck again for eight more runs. Geneva tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh but came up short with a four run inning. Joe Jurinko hit a two-run homer in that seventh inning, but it was too little, too late. Jon Jurinko launched a two-run homer in the first to get Geneva on the board. Geneva banged out 22 hits including three each from Derek Sumner and Justin McGurgan.

Geneva will head to Westminster for a doubleheader next Wednesday.
