SUMNER HONORED FOR ACADEMIC

ANDATHLETIC EXCELLENCE BY ESPN THE MAGAZINE

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva′s baseball team received quite an honor this week as one of its seniors was honored by ESPN The Magazine for his achievements on and off the field. Senior pitcher Derek Sumner (New Castle, PA) was one of only four PAC players to be named to the Academic All-District 2 team.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) released its All-Academic teams this week for baseball and Sumner became only the second ever selection to come out of Geneva College. In the fall, senior football player Dan Terracciano was also honored by Co-Sida. On the field, Sumner was clearly Geneva′s leader on the mound. In 14 appearances, Sumner posted a 2.59 ERA and an 8-4 overall record. He struck out a school record 93 batters in 83 innings of work. At the plate, Sumner had a .384 average with a team best seven home runs and 37 RBI′s.

Off the field, Sumner has been equally as impressive in the classroom. Holding a 3.55 cumulative GPA in his major of elementary education, Sumner has also been very active in his participation with SAAC (student-athlete advisory committee) on Geneva′s campus.

"Derek has been an outstanding example to not only our players, but to the entire Geneva campus," says head coach Alan Sumner. "He exemplifies excellence in every aspect of his life and sets an incredible example for our younger players. Derek has worked extremely hard on and off the field and he deserves every accolade he receives."

Sumner will now be one of four PAC baseball players to have his name put into the national ring for the opportunity to become an Academic All-American at the end of the season.
