Beaver Falls, PA – Based on results from the Geneva women′s soccer team in 2008, a 1-0 second half lead seemed pretty safe. After posting a school record ten shut-outs a year ago, the Golden Tornadoes looked as though they had things well in hand in their 2009 season opener against Marietta. The Pioneers had other ideas and a pair of second half goals proved to be the difference in a 2-1 Marietta victory.

Geneva opened the scoring when freshman forward Elise Mann picked the pocket of a Marietta defender and deposited a shot just under the cross bar for her first collegiate goal in her first career game. Mann struck in the 28th minute and her goal held up until early in the second half.

Tessa Howland tied the score for Marietta with a goal in the 59th minute and only five minutes later Christi Tims knocked in the game winner on a feed from Chelsea Hennen. Marietta had seemingly tied the score eight minutes into the second half, but a late foul call disallowed the goal, but only delayed the inevitable for the Pioneers.

Marietta out shot Geneva 17-12 for the game, while both goalkeepers came up with seven saves each. Geneva′s Lauren Londino, who picked up all eight wins a year ago for Geneva, made several key saves to hold the lead in the first half.

The Golden Tornadoes will take to the road this weekend when they travel to Pitt-Bradford for a 1 pm kickoff. Geneva returns home next Wednesday to host LaRoche at 7 pm.
