OPENING SUCCESS, GENEVA HOLDS ON AGAINST
FROSTBURG IN SEASON OPENER

Beaver Falls, PA - It was a perfect night for football at Reeves Field on Saturday as a capacity crowd witnessed a 41-28 Geneva victory over Frostburg State in the 2009 season opener. The 13 point victory did not go without its fair share of drama as Geneva watched a 20-point fourth quarter lead slowly melt away before a late touchdown by the Golden Tornadoes iced the game away.

Geneva′s offense scored a pair of first half touchdowns, but the story of the game was the Golden Tornadoes′ defense as it also found its way into the end zone twice in the first half. Frostburg opened the scoring on a 43 yard Avery White punt return just three minutes into the game. Geneva′s offense answered quickly with a nine play, 57 yard drive that was capped by a three yard run from Gerard Muschette. Frostburg struck for an 80 yard touchdown reception from White before Matt Dean capped an eight play, 51 yard drive for the Golden Tornadoes to tie the score early in the second quarter.

With the game tied, it was the defenses turn to find the end zone. Brian Wilson picked up a fumble and scampered 23 yards to give Geneva its first lead of the game. With Frostburg threatening to tie the game, Rich Kolesar stepped in front of a pass at the three yard line and ran for a 97 yard interception return, the second longest return in Geneva school history.

Geneva tacked on another score early in the third quarter on an AJ Delmonico ten yard reception from David Girardi. Leading by 20, the Golden Tornadoes watched Frostburg put a pair of scores on the board to cut the lead to 34-28 before Geneva′s defense came up with another fumble recovery that led to a Girardi two yard run in the final minute of the game.

Girardi threw for 200 yards on 19-32, while the rushing game was led by Muschette′s 68 yards on 15 carries. Frostburg actually out gained Geneva by a 292-276 margin, but the only numbers that mattered were those in the final score.

The Golden Tornadoes will travel Saint Vincent College next Saturday before returning home to take on Thiel College on September 26th.
