After several years of planning and preparation, Geneva College sent 16 students to spend a semester in Rome. Academic Dean Dave Guthrie, Semester in Rome Director Dr. Jeff Cole, and Ann Burkhead and Nancy Pelaia of Geneva′s Crossroads Center for off-campus studies gathered with families to send the travelers off.

“I feel like I've been talking about this trip forever, and I can't believe it′s finally happening,” says Lisa Lyon, a junior communications major.

A Geneva program taught by Geneva faculty, the Semester in Rome is a unique living-learning experience focusing mainly on the Humanities and Italian language and culture. Most of the students were introduced to the program in 2008, when Cole held a presentation for the freshman class.

“Amanda McCrina, Melissa Hershey and I were all sitting at the same table during the presentation,” explains sophomore Katie Tricarico. “We thought, ‘We should all go to Rome together′ and here we are!”

The Semester in Rome is housed in a large, secure, well-maintained villa located near many of Rome′s major historical and cultural sites. Almost all of the classes will be taught by Dr. Lynda Szabo, Geneva College professor of English. Site Director Kristen Snyder, also a college employee, will oversee student life at the Rome campus.

Travel throughout Rome and Italy is an integral part of the curriculum, and the group will take field trips to sites such as Pompeii, Florence and Venice. Students will also have long weekends and a 10-day fall break to spend time traveling and sightseeing in Europe.
