Shannon Rech named national runner of the week.Beaver Falls, PA – For the second consecutive week a Geneva College student-athlete has been handed a national weekly honor. One week after Geneva men′s soccer goalkeeper David Callahan was honored, freshman cross country runner Shannon Rech (Austintown, OH) received similar recognition.

Rech led the Geneva women′s cross country team to a fourth place finish at the Saint Vincent College Invitational last weekend. Although the conditions were not favorable because of rain and wind, Rech posted a career best time of 20:19 on the 5K course. Her time was good enough for 10th place overall, including a 6th place finish against Presidents′ Athletic Conference foes. It was the fourth consecutive race to begin the season in which Rech was Geneva′s top female finisher.

“We have a very young team,” explained first year head coach Brian Yowler. “We are relying heavily on many of our newcomers to produce good results and Shannon has be consistently running at the top of the pack all season. Like the rest of our newcomers, Shannon will only continue to improve in the next four years. The future is bright for her and our program. This is a very special honor and she should be very proud of her early accomplishments.”

Rech and her teammates will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational. Geneva will be competing with other conference schools at the PAC championships on October 24. Rech should fare well since the conference championships will be held right back at Saint Vincent College. The NCCAA cross country nationals will be held at Cedarville University on October 31.
