Canton, OH - Following the longest lay-off of the season, the Geneva College cross country team got back on the course on Saturday at the Walsh University Invitational. The Golden Tornadoes competed against five other schools on the men′s side and seven other schools for the women. In men′s action, Geneva finished with 85 points and a fourth place overall finish. The women finished with 124 points and a sixth place finish.
The cross country teams enjoyed a pair of weekends away from competition leading up to Saturday′s action. The Golden Tornadoes were competing in their final tune-up before next week′s PAC championships at Saint Vincent College.
Geneva has a total of four runners that have already qualified for the NCCAA national meet in November. Each of those four runners performed well at Walsh despite very sloppy conditions in Canton. In men′s action, Nick Edinger finished tenth overall with a final time of 27:56. Teammate Ryan Thorn crossed the line two spots later in 12th position and a time of 28:01. Both runners will be competing for Geneva at the NCCAA nationals. Other top performances for the men included Ryan Schrecongost′s personal best time of 29:32 which was good enough for 22nd position. Josh Gunnett rounded out the top 25 with a time of 29:39 on the 8K course.
Geneva′s top two female runners Shannon Rech and Julia Urbanski again led the way for the Golden Tornadoes. Rech finished 18th overall in a time of 20:28 and teammate Urbanski finished 29th with a time of 21:00. Both runners will be competing at the NCCAA national meet. Sarah Davis (35), Olivia Biddle (43) and Samantha Miller (46) all finished the race in the top 50.
The Golden Tornadoes will travel to Saint Vincent next Saturday for the PAC championships before qualifying runners compete at the NCCAA national on November 14th at Cedarville University.
