Greenville, PA - Coming into the final week of the regular season, Geneva′s women′s soccer team had dropped five consecutive matches and had put itself in a must win situation in the final two matches of the season. Step one was completed on Wednesday with a win against Waynesburg and the parlay was made complete on Friday afternoon with a victory against Thiel in the season finale. The Golden Tornadoes defeated the Tomcats 2-0 to improve to 9-8 on the season and officially qualify for the NCCAA post-season. Geneva College has a rule in place that a team must complete its regular season with at least a .500 record if it is to advance to regional play. Geneva′s victory on Friday clinched a winning season and thus advancing the Golden Tornadoes into regional competition beginning in November.

Senior midfield Jamie Gessner was not about to see her career come to an end on Friday so she took matters into her own hands or in this case her own feet as she found the back of the net to open the scoring in the first half. Freshman Maura Allen doubled Geneva′s lead later in the first stanza for the only two goals of the match.

Geneva′s defense and junior goalkeeper Lauren Londino made the lead stand up as they posted their sixth shut-out of the season.

The Golden Tornadoes will not play the waiting game to determine when, where and who will be competing in the NCCAA Eastern Regional tournament with a berth into the NCCAA national tournament on the line. It is the second consecutive year that Geneva has advanced to the NCCAA regional where they were defeated by Roberts Wesleyan in first round play a year ago.
