Monaca, PA - Every time Geneva′s men′s basketball team needed a big basket, it turned to leading scorer Rich Colick. Every time the junior forward got the call he responded as the Golden Tornadoes came away with a 72-64 victory over Penn State Beaver on Monday night in Monaca. The victory was Geneva′s second straight as the Golden Tornadoes improved to 3-3 on the young season.
"We had some problems putting that team away in the second half," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. "They are a talented bunch that is tough to beat on the road. I am very proud of our effort, especially the work of Rich (Colick). He made every big shot he took and we just kept feeding him the ball."
Colick posted a game high 23 points on 9-13 shooting from the field. He also led the Golden Tornadoes with eight rebounds. Colick was coming off a 22 point effort in a win over LaRoche where he was 8-9 from the field. The NCCAA first team All-American has picked right up where he left off a year ago.
Geneva also got help from sophomore Lambros Svingos with 12 points and six rebounds in the victory. The Golden Tornadoes took a three point lead into the halftime break and led by as many as eight points on three separate occasions in the second half. The Lions were able to cut the lead to one point but where never able to take the lead.
The Golden Tornadoes made good on their efforts from long distance by going 6-14 from three point range in the victory. Penn State Beaver got 23 points from Zach Fetchin in the loss.
Geneva and Penn State split the season series last year with the first ever Geneva loss to its cross town rivals. The Golden Tornadoes will now head into PAC play on Wednesday at Washington & Jefferson. Geneva returns home on Saturday to play host to Thiel College at 3 pm. "We are in a good place right now," said Santarsiero. "We have a tough road ahead within the conference, but we are improving every day."
