ADCP Honors SymposiumStudents in Geneva College′s Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCP) know the value of real-life learning. Combining classroom knowledge with field experience, each student completes an applied research project as the culmination of their coursework. At the semiannual ADCP Applied Research Project Honors Symposium on Friday, November 13, four students presented their research to professors, fellow students and ADCP alumni.

Susan Singer, Human Services, presented her research on “Disaster Preparedness at Crossroads Vineyard Church;” Jeffrey Kramer, Human Resources, on “Evaluation of the Physical Exercise Program at the Monroeville Senior Center;” Jeffrey Parsons, Community Ministry, on “Spiritual Wellness Programs for Employees of Nursing Homes;” and Christopher Sawyer, Human Resources, presented “Service Level Agreement Needs Assessment.”

Students develop their applied research projects throughout the 17 months of the ADCP. In the classroom, each course concentrates on one chapter of the project. At the same time, each student completes field research with a specific organization. For many students, the expertise they develop through this project enhances – or even sparks – their career after graduation.

“Education is more than just memorizing a list of facts,” says Assistant Dean of Adult Education Dr. Ralph Phillips. “It′s learning deeply so you know not only the ‘what′ of the subject, but also of yourself, your faith, and how to apply your learning to real-life situations. After completing the applied research project, many students tell me that this research project was the best learning experience of their entire college career.”

The Geneva College Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCP) enables adults with prior college and work experience to earn a bachelor′s degree in as little as 17 months. Classes meet one evening per week in 11 convenient locations throughout western Pennsylvania. The ADCP offers majors in community ministry, human resources and human services.
