Bethany, WV - First year Geneva College women′s coach Renee Drake is finding out that the Golden Tornadoes enjoy playing at the friendly confines of Metheny Fieldhouse. Conversley, the Geneva College women have not found much to celebrate on the road in the first half of the season. On Saturday afternoon, the Golden Tornadoes dropped their fifth consecutive road game to start the season with a 60-55 loss to Bethany College. The loss dropped Geneva to 4-5 with all five losses coming away from home. The Bison improved to 3-5 with the victory as Geneva will head into the Christmas break still in search of its first victory against a PAC opponent.
In recent road losses, it has been the turnover bug that hampered the Golden Tornadoes. On Saturday, Geneva did an outstanding job in protecting the basketball with only 11 turnovers for the game. Two other problems resurfaced against the Bison wherein Geneva did not shoot the ball well from the perimeter or from the foul line and had a difficult time in the rebounding battle. The Golden Tornadoes made just 4-22 from three-point range, 9-17 from the foul line and shot 35% from the field for the game. Geneva also lost the rebounding battle 52-35.
"We just had a very difficult time moving their post players around," said Drake. "They have some big bodies and it was not a good match-up for us. The more distressing part of the loss was our poor shooting from the foul line. However, I will give our kids credit for battling to the end and giving ourselves a chance to win down the stretch."
Drake saw the Golden Tornadoes battle back from ten points down in the final eight minutes and cut the lead to only three in the final minute, but could not draw any closer. Bethany iced the game away from the foul line as the Bison made 6-9 from the stripe in the second half. Meanwhile, the Golden Tornadoes were unable to come all the way back with a mark of 1-12 from three-point range in the second half.
Alyse Scarsella was solid for the Golden Tornadoes with a team high 15 points and seven rebounds. Renee Rawding added 11 points and Beth DeLuca chipped in with ten in a losing cause.
Geneva will enjoy a three-week lay-off for the holidays before getting back to work at home on December 30th against Carlow University. The Golden Tornadoes rejoin action in the PAC on January 2nd at defending conference champion Thomas More.
