Beaver Falls, PA - After 18 days of holiday celebrations, the Geneva College women′s basketball team took a bit longer than head coach Renee Drake would have liked in the final game of 2009. The Golden Torndoes picked things up in the second half and beat Carlow University going away by the score of 75-48. It was the second win for Geneva over Carlow this season following a season opening victory against the Celtics. Wednesday night′s victory moved Geneva′s overall record to 5-5 as Carlow dropped to 5-9 on the season.

The Golden Tornadoes managed only nine first half field goals and took a slim 30-27 lead into the locker room, but Geneva came out of the dressing room on a mission and quickly put the game away. Midway through the second half Geneva had opened up a 20 point lead at 53-33 with 23 of the first 29 points of the half. The Golden Tornadoes finished the game with its biggest margin of the night at 27 points. Out scoring Carlow 45-21 in the final 20 minutes, Geneva held the Celtics to only eight second half field goals. Meanwhile, Geneva shot 57% from the field in the final 20 minutes to take control of the game.

Every player on Geneva′s roster scored at least one point with Renee Rawding leading the way with 13 points including a 6-6 effort from the foul line. Beth DeLuca added 11 points including a pair of key three point field goals that got Geneva off and running in the second half. Valerie Hamilton finished with ten points and five rebounds in the victory. Geneva forced 27 turnovers while committing only 14 miscues of its own. "We really turned up the defensive pressure in the second half," said Drake. "Our defense led to a lot of easy baskets on the offensive end. I was proud of the way we battled in the second half after knocking off some of the rust."

The Golden Tornadoes will get back into PAC action on Saturday when they travel to two-time defending conference champion Thomas More. Geneva returns home next Thursday to host Saint Vincent College at 6 pm.
