Orientation week at Geneva College always includes a community service project.

Orientation week at Geneva College always includes a community service project, and below-freezing temperatures didn't stop new students from diving into this semester′s task. On Saturday, January 9, they teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to renovate a home in nearby Monaca, Pennsylvania.

Along with several Geneva staff and orientation mentors, students removed screws and fixtures, took down drapes, tore off wallpaper and even knocked down a few walls.

“There was a lot of hard work to do, and overall it was a good experience,” says Missy Davis, assistant director of campus ministries at Geneva. “The students seemed to enjoy getting their hands dirty and we hope this will be the start of a lot more partnering with Habitat.”

Jill Hanson, a senior accounting major and orientation mentor, agrees. “Throughout orientation week, we talked a lot about getting involved in the community of Beaver Falls. We hope that new students and current students alike will really get plugged in and make a difference.”

The college has four other builds planned for the coming semester: January 30, February 13, March 27 and April 24. To volunteer, contact Missy Davis at mjdavis@geneva.edu.

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing by empowering people to change their lives. The Beaver County chapter has been working toward this mission since 1992 to provide homes for 37 families throughout the county. For more information, visit www.beavercountyhabitat.org.
