Geneva College will celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the week of January 18-22. This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff not only to reflect on Dr. King′s vision, but also to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural, racial and ethnic issues we face today.
Monday, January 18, at 7 p.m., civil rights activist Rutha Harris will perform with the Sons of Thunder. As a student in the early 1960s, Harris was an original member of the Freedom Singers. She traveled 50,000 miles through 40 states in nine months, presenting the civil rights message through song at colleges, universities, jails, political meetings and at the 1963 March on Washington. The Sons of Thunder is an a cappella group from the Beaver Valley. The concert will be held in Skye Lounge, with refreshments to follow.
Also on Monday, an Understanding Racism seminar will be held for faculty and staff from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and for students at 2 to 5 p.m. The seminar will be in Northwood Hall, Room 013.
On Wednesday, January 20, at 10:10 a.m., Professor of Communication Dr. Todd Allen will speak on “The Civil Rights Movement as a Calling” as part of Geneva′s chapel service. Chapel is held in Metheny Fieldhouse. Allen is chair of Geneva College′s communication department and director of The Common Ground Project. Wednesday′s events will also include a showing of The Witness at 8 p.m. in the Science & Engineering building, Room 022.
During the fall semester, students were invited to write and submit essays for the MLK essay contest. On Friday, January 22, at 10:10 a.m. the winner of the contest will be announced and invited to present his or her paper to the gathered audience in Skye Lounge.
