Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College softball sure does enjoy playing on its home field. On Saturday, the Golden Tornadoes moved to 7-1 on the season at home and 31-7 all-time on their campus field by sweeping first place Thomas More by scores of 4-3 and 13-9. The sweep improved Geneva′s overall record to 15-13 on the year.
After falling behind 3-0 in game one, the Golden Tornadoes chipped their way back into the game before picking up a walk-off win in the bottom of the eighth. Geneva′s offense got going in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs scoring on an error and a Lexi Svingos sacrifice fly Trailing by a run in the last inning, Leanne Abate cranked her first homer of the year to the game and send it into extra innings. In the first extra frame, Samantha Michetti line a ball into the left corner to score Martha Adams with the game winner. Julie DiLonardo went the distance for her 13th victory of the season. She five hits and struck out five in game one.
DiLonardo started and won game two after 3.1 innings of work where she allowed four earned runs. Ariel Lilly came on in relief and got two big outs to stop a fourth inning Thomas More rally. She also pitched the fifth and sixth innings before turning the game over to Adams in the seventh. Geneva scored first in the second inning when Samantha Bautista tripled and scored on a Leanne Abate ground out. The Golden Tornadoes exploded for five runs in the third inning highlighted by a DiLonardo grand slam. Adriane Blake contributed an RBI single in the fourth and Lexi Svingos extended Geneva′s lead with a two-run single in the fifth. Geneva banged out 13 hits in the night cap including multiple hit performances from Adams, Svingos and Samantha Bautista.
The Golden Tornadoes will host Grove City in a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 pm.
