Waynesburg, PA - The old saying "It′s not how you start, but how you finish" became a harsh reality for the Geneva baseball team on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes saw a pair of early game leads disappear in both ends of their doubleheader at Waynesburg. As a result, Geneva dropped a pair by scores of 4-3 in nine innings and 10-6. The doubleheader loss put an end to Geneva′s five-game winning streak and moved its overall record to 14-19 on the season.
Game one starter Dylan Viehdorfer was cruising along in game one with a 3-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. Viehdorfer had thrown six scoreless innings before surrendering three runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Yellowjackets sent the game into extra innings. Waynesburg plated the game winner with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Geneva scored all of its runs in a three-run second inning. A Joel Dille groundout scored the first run followed by RBI singles from Phil Shallenberger and Jon Jurinko. Geneva had just five hits in the game with three coming in the second inning rally.
Game two got off to an even better start for Geneva as it opened up a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three more in the top of the second inning. Justin Acosta′s RBI single opened the scoring followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adam Scheiderer. In the second inning, Shallenberger tripled in a run and scored himself on a Jurinko base hit. The inning finished with an RBI base hit from Ben Detrow to extend the lead to 5-0. Waynesburg responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and broke it open with a six spot in the sixth inning. Mike Trn was handed the loss after 5+ innings of work allowing nine hits and seven earned runs. Geneva banged out 12 hits including multiple hit performances from Shallenberger, Jurinko, Acosta and Scheiderer.
Geneva opens a three-game series with Thiel on Friday with a single game in Greenville. The regular season concludes on Saturday with a home doubleheader against the Tomcats at 1 pm.
