Geneva College (0-0) vs. Frostburg State University (0-0)

September 4, 2010

7:30 pm - Bobcat Stadium

Frostburg, MD

Geneva College head football coach Geno DeMarco enters uncharted waters on Saturday as the long time head coach becomes the first Golden Tornadoes′ coach to enter his 18th season in the 120 year history of Geneva football. DeMarco and the Golden Tornadoes will open their 120th season the same way they began the 119th season with a meeting against Frostburg State University. One year ago, Geneva defeated Frostburg State 41-28 to begin a run that ended with an 8-3 overall record and the record fifth NCCAA Victory Bowl title. As for Frostburg State, the Bobcats finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 1-9 and will look to get back on track as they open the new season at home against the Golden Tornadoes.

The 2009 meeting featured 20 unanswered points from Geneva College in the second and third quarter, which included a record 97-yard interception return for a touchdown from Rich Kolesar. The two-time NCCAA All-American is gone as are All-American defensive standouts Aaron Tommelleo and Brian Wilson. Geneva College does return a total of nine players that have seen starting action on the defensive side of the ball. Similarly, the Golden Tornadoes have nine starters returning on the offensive side of the ball. Senior quarterback David Girardi will guide the offensive ship after setting a school record last year by completing over 62% of his passes. Beginning his third season as the starting quarterback, Girardi ranks fourth on the all-time list in passing efficiency. Girardi will also spend a lot of time handing the ball to Gerard Muschette after the tailback posted nearly 1200 yards last season. In his senior season, Muschette is closing in on the top five rushing leaders in Geneva College history.

Geneva′s defense will have a foundation built on returning All-Conference performers Adam Rose and Chance Kelosky, In fact, Geneva returns four starters at the lineback position including last year′s leading tackler in Solomon Hejirika. Matt Curry has moved to strong safety while Marcus Costanza, a two-year starter at cornerback, will be holding down the fort at free safety.

Frostburg State will be led by a veteran secondary that returns all four starters from a year ago. However, senior Terryl Monroe will not be available in the opener but Ian Turner will be on the field for the Bobcats. Turner, a second team All-ACFC selection posted 26 tackles and seven pass break ups in 2009. The offense will be led by the running back duo of Anthony King and Anton Wade. The tandem combined for 854 yards and five touchdowns. King and Wade also combined for 23 passes for 214 yards. Junior Josh Volpe will get the call at quarterback for the Bobcats as they look to improve upon a disappointing 2009 season.

The Golden Tornadoes return to Reeves Field next Saturday night to face-off against Albright College as part of the PAC-MAC challenge. Geneva will open its home season against Albright before welcoming two-time defending PAC champion Thomas More to Reeves Field on September 18th.
