Chapel, a weekly devotional time for the Geneva College community, is conducted on Wednesdays from 10:15-11:00 a.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse. This time provides an opportunity for the campus to gather together to praise God, hear His word, and seek His favor and direction. Attendance is mandatory for students and the entire campus community is encouraged to participate.

For the 2010-11 academic year, the Chapel Leadership Team has chosen the theme: “You Gotta Serve Somebody.” The theme selection was influenced by the book Counterfeit Gods by Tim Keller. Chapel coordinator, Dr. Dean Smith says, “Our hope is that during the course of the year, that the various speakers will help us identify our idols so that we can confess them and have Jesus replace them.”

Chapel is run by a team of students, faculty and staff. Smith points out, “The chapel team has and is doing a great job. Team members provide input and helpful suggestions regarding speakers and music.” Keith Martel, Director of the Center for Faith and Practice, agrees and adds, “We are a very different group of people with different understandings of what should happen when the people of God gather. In this, we push each chapel on to be the best that it can be.”

The chapel team has lined up many speakers with the intent of engaging students. Among them is Saleem Ghrubril, former director of the Pittsburgh Project and now director of Pittsburgh Promise. Ghrubril is part of a mission to strengthen the city of Pittsburgh by reversing population and (school) enrollment declines, growing high school and college graduation rates and deploying a diverse well prepared work force. Other speakers are Denise Stoffer and Trevor Stiffler, students who spent last summer in Australia studying abroad. Also Byron Borger, owner of Hearts and Minds Bookstore, will be speaking on calling a vocation.

The chapel program is always changing and stretching to minister to students. Dean Smith points out, “In a Cabinet article 65% agreed that chapel should be mandatory and 75% thought the speakers were good.” The chapel program plans to continue to improve and move forward this year.
