Beaver Falls, PA - The lesson learned by Geneva College men′s soccer fans on Saturday is that you shouldn′t leave the match until the final whistle blows. The Golden Tornadoes gave those die-hard fans something to remember for a long time with a comeback for the ages on Saturday that ultimately resulted in a 3-2 overtime victory over Thomas More. The win was Geneva′s sixth straight and pushed its overall record to 7-1-1 for the season.
Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, the Golden Tornadoes watched Thomas More pound what seemed to be the final nail in the coffin with a goal with less than three minutes remaining in the second half that extended its lead to 2-0. The fun was just about to start for the Golden Tornadoes. It took just 25 seconds for Geneva to cut that lead in half when David Harwood found the net for the first goal of the match with what at the time seemed too little, too late for the Golden Tornadoes.
Garrett Masters had other ideas as the freshman took a feed from Jon Mathoslah and found the net to tie the game just over a minute later that forced the game into overtime. With all the momentum gushing to Geneva′s sideline, the Golden Tornadoes were able to quickly take advantage just 2 ½ minutes into the extra session as Chris Morschl won the game for the Golden Tornadoes with an assist going to Zac Buffalini.
Evan Biedenbach picked up the victory for the Golden Tornadoes in goal as Geneva won a game that was seemingly lost minutes before the final regulation horn sounded. "This is game that a lot of people will remember for a long time," said head coach Gary Dunda. "It is a great indication of the character we have on this team and the type of work ethic that each of these guys possess. We will never stop working and today that characteristic paid off big time. I couldn′t be prouder of this group."
Geneva will be right back on the home field on Monday night when it hosts Muskingum College before welcoming Thiel to Merriman Complex on Wednesday night.
