Rochester, NY - All season long it has been Geneva′s inability to find the net on the offensive side of the field that has plagued the Golden Tornadoes′ women′s soccer team. On Wednesday evening, Geneva fell into the same rut and dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to Roberts Wesleyan in the NCCAA East regional semi-finals. The loss ended Geneva′s season with an overall record of 10-8-3. Just one year ago, it was Roberts Wesleyan that defeated Geneva on the 11th penalty kick shooter to end its season. On Wednesday night, the Raiders scored the lone goal of the game in the 74th minute and held on to advance to the regional finals.
Roberts Wesleyan fired 19 shots to Geneva′s six in the match, but senior goalkeeper Lauren Londino ended her fantastic career with a ten save effort that kept her teammates in the match until the end. "I was so proud of our ladies," said head coach Linda Sumner. "They all played extremely hard and we had some chances but just didn′t take advantage of them when it counted."
It was Roberts Wesleyan′s Michelle Roberts who found the net for the eventual game winner in a match that amazingly did not have one foul called in 90 minutes of action. Risa Tillman and Amanda Munsch had the only shots on goal for Geneva College in the match, but neither could beat goalkeeper Amanda Prestigiacomo.
The Golden Tornadoes opened the season with an 11 match unbeaten streak at 8-0-3 before dropping seven of its final nine matches in the regular season. Despite those disappointments, Geneva has much to build on for the future. "We have to continue to move forward with this program and learn from experiences like the one we had tonight," said Sumner. "We will keep working hard and we have a great nucleus to do just that starting next season."
