Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva men′s basketball team didn′t have to travel too far on Monday night to gain its first road victory of the season. In fact, the Golden Tornadoes simply had to drive across Beaver County to record a 79-56 victory over Penn State Beaver. The win pushed Geneva′s overall record to 5-2 and secured the first victory of the season away from Metheny Fieldhouse.
Geneva jumped all over the Lions in the first half and took a 46-21 lead into the locker room. The Golden Tornadoes held Penn State to just eight field goals in the first half while shooting 62% on their own including a sizzling 8-12 mark from beyond the three-point arc. Senior guard Bryan Hill was at it again in adding to his conference leading three-point shooting totals. Hill was 5-7 from three-point range but was actually out dueled by fellow guard David Phillips who posted a perfect 5-5 night from long range. Phillips scored a team best 17 points with Hill checking in with 15 points. Leading scorer Rich Colick was held into double figures for the first time all season with just eight points. Lambros Svingos added to the offensive totals with 14 points on 6-9 shooting from the field.
"We are just really shooting the basketball very well right now," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. "When Bryan and David get going like that from the perimeter it′s just a matter of the other guys getting them the ball and staying out of the way."
Geneva finished the game with a mark of 49% from the field and 11 three-point field goals. Michael Mollett was the Lions only player to reach double figures with a 16 point effort in a losing cause.
"I was extremely pleased with our defensive effort," said Santarsiero. "Forcing 17 turnovers led to some easy transition looks and our guys were able to take advantage of it throughout the game."
The Golden Tornadoes will travel to Canton on Wednesday to battle an old time friend in Malone College. Geneva and Malone will hook up again after skipping last year for the first time since 1985. The Golden Tornadoes return home on Saturday night to face PAC foe Bethany College at 7:30 pm.
