Latrobe, PA - The offense for the Geneva College women′s basketball team has hit a dry spell. The Golden Tornadoes have averaged only 35.6 points per game in their last three efforts including a 60-30 loss to Saint Vincent on Thursday night. The Bearcats were playing their first home game since long time head coach Kristen Zawacki passed away on Christmas day and the Bearcats certainly put together a great effort to honor her memory.
The night started with each Geneva player presenting a flower to members of the Saint Vincent team as a show of support for their recent loss. Despite the emotional rollercoaster the Lady Bearcats have been riding in the past two weeks, they were able to step up their defense and force 19 first half turnovers against the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva managed only 12 shots in the first 20 minutes and trailed 27-13 heading to the locker room.
"We have certainly been in an offensive slump for three games," said head coach Renee Drake. "Tonight was just a case of making poor decisions with the basketball and not taking care of things on offense." Geneva turned the ball over on its first eight possessions of the game and was never able to recover.
"We preach ball protection and defensive rebounding and we were not able to accomplish either tonight," said Drake. Saint Vincent pulled down 25 offensive rebounds and forced a game total of 32 turnovers as it pulled away from Geneva down the stretch.
No Geneva player reached double figures in scoring for the game as Beth DeLuca led the way with eight points and Leah Prisuta added seven in the loss. "It has been a difficult week having to play Thomas More and Saint Vincent in back to back games but these are the teams we will be measuring ourselves against in the PAC."
The Golden Tornadoes head back to the road on Saturday to face Chatham University at 2 pm. Geneva returns to Metheny Fieldhouse next Wednesday at 5:30 pm to host Grove City.
