Bethany, WV - The Geneva College men′s basketball team came into Saturday′s match-up against Bethany looking for some revenge from an early December loss to the Bison as just one of four losses on the year. The game plan didn′t come out quite as the Golden Tornadoes′ had planned as Bethany locked down its defense in the second half and defeated Geneva 75-63 to sweep the season series from Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes loss dropped their record to 14-5 while Bethany improved to an identical 14-5 mark.

In a game that went back and forth for the first 20 minutes, Geneva and Bethany appeared to be headed for a close finish. However, a four-minute stretch midway through the second half proved to be the difference for the Bison. With Geneva leading 38-37 at the 14:11 mark, Bethany went on a 14-4 run to march to a 51-42 lead and it never looked back. "They did a solid job on us defensively," said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. "We have enjoyed some good success in recent weeks and our guys need to understand that we have put a bullseye on our backs and these teams are waiting for us every night."

Bethany stretched its lead to double digits with just over six minutes remaining in the game and the Golden Tornadoes were never able to make a run to get the deficit under ten the rest of the way. "We have enjoyed some special offensive performances in recent games but we just could not get anything consistently going all day. Give Bethany credit for a solid defensive effort."

Richard Colick and Dave Phillips led the offense with 12 points each while Bryan Hill added 11 in the loss. Perhaps the offensive star of the day came from the Geneva bench in Matt Lorello. Lorello scored ten points and added four rebounds in the game. He was a perfect 3-3 from the field and 4-4 from the foul line in the loss.

Geneva will visit Thomas More next Wednesday night before heading home to face meet Saint Vincent next Saturday at 7:30 pm.
