Bradford, PA - The season opener came 48 hours later than expected as the scheduled opener against Penn State Beaver was postponed until next Tuesday because of inclement weather. The Golden Tornadoes finally did open the 2011 campaign on Saturday with a 2-0 loss at Pitt-Bradford. Geneva, which opened the 2010 season with a record of 8-0-3 and didn′t drop its first game until October, could not generate any offense in the opener and managed only four shots in 90 minutes.
Neither team could find the net in the first half as the teams went into the halftime break in a scoreless tie. Pitt-Bradford finally broke the ice in the 67th minute on a header goal from Linsay Stack off of a corner kick. Just 11 minutes later, PBU increased its lead on Lindsay Sherman′s first goal of the season.
Geneva did not manage any shots in the second half of the game but was kept alive thanks to freshman goalkeeper Sara Mittner, who was playing in her first collegiate action. Mittner made four saves in her first action.
Geneva will return home on Tuesday for the make-up contest against Penn-State Beaver at 4 pm. It will be the first of three consecutive home games next week as Geneva will also host Mt. Aloysius on Thursday and will welcome Medialle to Merriman Complex next Saturday afternoon.
